Inaugurated on 28 April 1937 by Benito Mussolini, Cinecittà film studios was quickly dubbed the Hollywood of Italy.

The project for the first twelve soundstages was designed by the architect Gino Peressutti. In addition, the project included the construction of a centre for the cinema industry that would integrate buildings for developing, printing and editing, a new headquarters for the Istituto Luce and the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia.

Nineteen films were produced there in 1937, including Il feroce Saladino directed by Mario Bonnard. The 1950s saw a boom in American productions at Cinecittà: Mervyn LeRoy’s Quo vadis? dates to 1951, William Wyler’s Ben-Hur to 1959.

Many key pages of the universal history of film were written on the sets of Cinecittà, including those which took Rome’s most vibrant face out into the world with the inimitable Dolce Vita.

Cinecittà Shows Off, a cultural initiative promoting the historical and architectural heritage of Cinecittà, offers visits to the permanent sets in addition to an exhibition route which includes 4 sections: the “Shooting at Cinecittà 1937-1990” exhibition, the “Backstage” exhibition, the submarine set built for the film U-571, and the new exhibition-installation dedicated to Federico Fellini entitled “Felliniana- Ferretti dreams Fellini”, curated by the Academy Award winning set designer Dante Ferretti.

MIAC – Italian Museum of Moving Images is a place to re/discover our collective imagination, where visitors can explore and experience the history and evolution of the audio-visual industry, through film clips, radio extracts and videos about the history of cinema.

Cinecittà hosts Italian and international film productions, and at times it is possible to chance upon shooting on a live film set.

In the 21st century, the soundstages of Cinecittà continue to provide settings for blockbuster American productions such as Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York, Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ and more recently, Catch 22 by George Clooney, Grant Heslov and Ellen Kuras and 6 Underground by Michael Bay
